Why Not Plants?

As a plant taxonomist, I have come to appreciate one simple truth: plants are nature’s greatest gift to humanity. They have nourished, healed, and sustained life for thousands of years, and they continue to support our health, food, and environment every single day.

Look around your home. The tea you drink, the spices in your kitchen, the vegetables on your table, the fruits you enjoy, the oil in your hair, the soap you use, the medicines in your cabinet, the cotton in your clothes, and even the furniture in your house all begin with plants. Our lives are deeply connected with the plant kingdom, often without us realizing it.

For generations, our grandparents placed their trust in nature. A warm cup of ginger tea for a cold, turmeric mixed with milk for comfort, neem for healthy skin, aloe vera for burns, mint for digestion, garlic in daily meals, amla for strong hair, castor oil for traditional home care, and countless other plant-based remedies were treasured household practices. These simple remedies were passed from one generation to the next because they proved valuable through everyday experience and became an important part of our cultural heritage.

Today, as concerns about pollution and excessive use of synthetic chemicals continue to grow, many people are returning to nature. Choosing plant-based products whenever possible is not merely a tradition—it is a step toward a healthier lifestyle and a cleaner environment. Plants provide renewable resources, support biodiversity, improve air quality, and promote sustainable living. Even small changes, such as using herbal teas, natural skincare products, fresh herbs, medicinal plants, and plant-derived household products, can make a meaningful difference.

To encourage this connection with nature, I have compiled a collection of common plants with their photographs and ethnobotanical uses. My hope is that readers will recognize the remarkable plants growing around them, appreciate the traditional knowledge associated with them, and confidently incorporate them into their daily lives.

Nature has always been our first teacher, our first pharmacy, and our greatest companion. The answers to many everyday needs are growing quietly around us. Let us rediscover their value, preserve our traditional knowledge, and reconnect with nature—one plant at a time.
